Tassajara Road winds and climbs the backbone
of Chew’s Ridge, eventually, after about 14 miles, ending deep
in the Santa Lucia Mountains at the Tassajara Zen Center, a
renowned Buddhist resort of hot springs and meditation. The top
of Chew’s Ridges is at an elevation of over 5,000 feet, and all
along the road is found dramatically steep forest, with
sweeping views of Monterey County.

entrance to building site
The native population of this part of the
mountains was known as the Esselen Tribe, a small group of
people who remained aloof from the missionaries that dominated
California beginning a few hundred years ago. Now only a few
descendents of the tribe remain, but the essence of the land is
largely unfazed by civilization.

upper part of building site, close to Tassajara Road;
This lot is a part of the hill country, is
mostly steep and forested and lies on the dirt portion of
Tassajara Road, starting about a quarter mile from the end of
the pavement, and bordering Tassajara Road for about a mile.
Much of it is very steep, but there is a good building site in
which there are several possible locations for a house. There
are good views from the site, looking across Cachagua and
Carmel Valley to the Santa Cruz Mountains on a clear day, and
looking up the local canyons.

upper part of building site, close to Tassajara Road;
The forest is oak and madrone. The building
site is about an acre and a half; the total lot is 40 acres.
Water is available from an existing and proven ten-lot well
system that has been in existence for about 25 years.
Electricity is available as well. Both utilities would arrive
at the site through an easement for underground installation.
Phone connections to the site are possible, and there is cell
phone reception. The drive time to downtown Monterey is about
50 minutes (through expansive ranch country—a pretty nice
commute).
